Tips On Giving A Child’s Bedroom An Update
I always find the summer holidays a great time to give the children’s bedrooms a good refresh. It’s also an activity the kids can really get involved with and help to pass the time during the many weeks before they return to school! Here are some tips on getting started.
Declutter!
Before you do anything else, it’s important to have a good old declutter. This always seems to be a love it or hate it activity (I love it, my youngest daughter hates it!) I tend to start with clothes, including school uniform that no longer fits! With your child present, empty the wardrobe and all the drawers and work through item by item and remember the three piles: keep, donate, recycle/bin. Once you’ve done this you are in a better position to see what you need and don’t need to replace. Do the same with toys, books, artwork, shells, pebbles, random bits of very important paper etc etc. You’ll be amazed by what you find! Always get the stuff you’re not keeping out of the house as soon as possible so it doesn’t creep back in or end up in another room!
Storage
Now you know what you are keeping the next step is to decide what storage you require for it all. Everything you decide to keep needs to have a home so everyone know where to find it and where to put it away after it’s been used. I like to use a mixture of practical storage such as clear under bed storage boxes as well as more decorative baskets and trinket boxes.
It’s important to make the room personable to your child so ask them if there is anything special they want to have on display and think about how you can make a feature from it. Consider what they use daily that they need easy access to. Are you keeping their current furniture or does it need replacing or adding to? Are you keeping the layout of the room the same or do you want/need to change the layout to suit any new furniture or function within the room?
Decoration
Giving a child’s room an update doesn’t mean you have to completely change the whole decorative scheme, there are lots of quick and inexpensive ways to refresh the space. Consider what artwork they have; is it still age appropriate or have they grown out of it? Swapping new pictures into the frames can make a big impact and using your child’s own artwork, certificates or photographs will help to personalise the space. New bedding and cushions can make a big difference; check with your child if they still love their dinosaur duvet cover!
If you want to give the walls a fresh lick of paint always get your child involved and try and let them make the choice of colour with your guidance. Have fun with the space, a kids bedroom doesn’t have to flow with the rest of your house, but it does need to feel special and unique to your child and it’s great to give them some ownership. Giving a curated range of colours from a paint brand you like will help them to make a decision and will ensure they choose a colour you are also happy with. My daughter was determined to have a beautiful but vivid orange in her bedroom (Charlotte’s Lock’s by Farrow and Ball). We used the colour on her bedroom door and added accessories to complement it throughout the room to tie the scheme together but the main background colour in the room was a soft grey; a little more calming.
