Notes On Colour: Blue

As I’ve enjoyed some family time at the seaside this summer I turn my attention to the ever popular colour of sea and sky; blue.

Psychology of Blue

Blue is a colour often associated with tranquility and calmness; the sound of waves gently lapping the beach. It also relates to the mind and intellect; ‘blue sky thinking’. It represents trust, logic and integrity.

Surrounding yourself with too much blue can have a negative psychological impact however and leave you ‘feeling blue’; it can feel cold and uncaring.

The Colour Blue

Research has shown that blue is the world’s favourite colour!

Blue is often thought of as the colour of choice for little boys and their clothes and toys. It also has associations with the coast and is a great option for a seaside property.

As always, when choosing a colour scheme consider how you want the space to feel. Light blue tones are restful and help to calm the mind and are often popular for a bedroom. Stronger darker blue tones tend to focus the mind and could be a great choice for a study. Be mindful that blue can feel cold so consider the tone carefully and also consider the aspect of the room; I would be wary of using in North or East facing rooms.

Featured Blue

The blue featured in the kitchen image above is ‘Stiffkey Blue’ by Farrow and Ball. A dramatic, deep, inky blue which makes a big impact. It’s a sophisticated rich colour that works as a great background to make artwork stand out.
