Styling Tips For Outdoor Entertaining

As I write this the rain is lashing against my office window! Yesterday however we had a glorious day celebrating a special birthday with family. The joys of the unpredictable English summer!

I wanted to share some tips and tricks for entertaining outdoors over the summer; how to make it special yet stress free.

Dress The Table

I would always advocate bringing your favourite pieces from indoors outdoors. It is so much nicer to eat from a proper plate with proper cutlery and wine just does’t taste the same from a plastic cup! It is no good having your best crockery and glassware hidden away in a cupboard, use it and enjoy it. If you are catering for very young children then by all means use something appropriate; Emma Bridgewater has a fantastic collection of attractive melamine plates, bowls and cups that have stood the test of time in our household. Use a pretty linen tablecloth and napkins to add colour, pattern and soft texture to the table. Using a mixture of different crockery, glassware and linen creates a more relaxed informal atmosphire.

Add Decoration

Add interest and decoration through fresh flowers, small plants and potted herbs. I like to use glass milk bottles filled with some greenery and flowers from the garden dotted about rather than a large arrangement which can take up a lot of space on the table and be difficult for guests to talk over! Pinwheels, honeycomb balls and bunting are all excellent for adding some colour and fun. Festoon lights are a great addition to an outdoor space and remember to have candles and matches ready for when the light starts to dim to add a soft glow of light.

Prepare Ahead

Plan your table styling and outdoor decoration in advance so you have all the pieces you need ready, and do as much prep work as you can beforehand to help to reduce stress during the event; you want to be able to enjoy yourself! Ensure to lay your table before guests arrive so you are ready to welcome them and enjoy a drink together. Bring out blankets and throws from the house and have ready in case it turns chilly.

My final tip is to always have a plan B in case of bad weather!
