Notes On Colour: Yellow

It’s Springtime! The colour that always comes to my mind at this time of year is yellow; with daffodils aplenty and the sunshine starting to make a very welcome appearance it’s time to feature this uplifting colour on the blog continuing my ‘Notes on Colour’ series.

The Colour Yellow

Yellow is thought to lift the spirits and promote mental activity so it is a great choice for rooms where creativity and innovation are needed such as a study space. It would also work well to create a warm welcoming atmosphere in an entrance hallway or as an uplifting colour in a kitchen or utility space.

It is important to use the right tone for your colour personality, in the right proportion and in the right place to create the positive effects of yellow. It often works well used as an accent colour through accessories and fabric to help lift a scheme.

Psychology of Yellow

Yellow is often associated with happiness, optimism and positive energy. It can boost our self esteem and is emotionally stimulating.

However, like every colour, there are adverse psychological traits. Yellow can evoke feelings of anxiety, irritation, nervousness and even depression.

Featured Yellow

I am drawn to the muted, earthy tones of yellow and ochres.

A yellow that I’m very tempted to use in my West facing study is Madeline by Little Greene It is a beautiful subtle, calm tone of yellow from their Sweet Treats Collection. It sits beautifully alongside Berit Ochra Linen Mix Fabric by Ada and Ina which can be made into curtains, blinds or even cushions and would compliment warm metallics such as gold and aged brass.

Please also have a read of my other notes on colour blogs  featuring green, orange, brown, blue and pink.
